Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 100 (June 2, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Chester Dockery, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 September 1950 near Tabu-dong, Korea. When the enemy threw a series of attacks on Company G’s defensive position, Sergeant Dockery and a mortar section were sent up as riflemen to reinforce a line platoon. In the ensuing action, he was wounded by a grenade but selflessly refused evacuation although his right hand had been rendered useless. Despite the heavy enemy fire, Sergeant Dockery fearlessly stood his ground and was such an inspiration to his comrades that his section of the company line was held until reinforcements arrived. His act of self sacrifice and courageous actions enabled him to personally account for four enemy killed and three wounded. His gallantry and devotion to duty reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
