The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Ted Carson Westmoreland, II, United States Army, for gallantry in action on 22 July 2003 against an armed enemy as an Assault Troop Medic, during combat operations in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in Iraq. Master Sergeant Westmoreland’s contributions directly credited this Nation with unequivocal success during three assaults against a building with two of the top three Iraqi Targets. He continually exposed himself to highly accurate enemy fire in successful efforts to save the life and limb of his fellow operators and maintain the momentum of this high risk assault. His valorous actions under fire had a direct and immediate impact on his unit’s ability to continue the fight. Through his distinctive accomplishments, Master Sergeant Westmoreland’s actions reflect great credit upon himself, this unit, and the United States Army.

He is credited for saving numerous lives, both American and indigenous personnel, and performed flawlessly during this strategic mission behind enemy lines. Through his distinctive accomplishments, Master Sergeant Westmoreland reflected great credit upon himself, the United States Army, and the Department of Defense.
