(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Brigadier General Joseph Pringle Cleland (ASN: 0-16239), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Assistant Commanding General, 43d Infantry Division, in action at Lubao, Philippine Islands, in 1945. Brigadier General Cleland was part of a small group that captured the bridge at Lubao, Philippine Islands, which was mined for demolition, before it could be destroyed. He and his force were cut off and had to fight to hold the bridge until reinforcements arrived. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Brigadier General Cleland, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
