Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 187 (June 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Lucian J. Cayer (ASN: RA-31400497), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 and 27 November 1950, in the vicinity of Somin-dong, Korea. On 25 November 1950, Company I was withdrawing under heavy pressure from numerically superior enemy forces. Sergeant Cayer volunteered to remain behind and undertake to evacuate the wounded, even though he knew this action would place in in great personal danger. He remained under heavy enemy fire for over two hours in order to accomplish his mission. On 27 November 1950, while his organization was forcing its way through an enemy roadblock, Sergeant Cayer again volunteered to evacuate wounded soldiers and was himself wounded while carrying a comrade from a hill. His willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of his wounded comrades, even though in great personal danger himself, was responsible for saving of numerous lives. The gallantry demonstrated by Sergeant Cayer on these occasions reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
