The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clarence H. Banks (ASN: RA-13302388), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 October 1951 in the vicinity of Tut-a-yon, Korea. On this date, during an orderly withdrawal, a platoon leader of Company A entered an enemy mine field and was seriously wounded after setting off a mine. Immediately several men entered the field in an effort to rescue the wounded officer, however, they also stepped on mines and were wounded. A medical aid man had successfully entered the area and was administering first aid to the wounded. Realizing that additional assistance was necessary, Private Banks, completely disregarding his own safety, maneuvered his way into the mine field and made repeated trips evacuating the wounded men to positions of safety. His courageous and daring action undoubtedly saved the lives of his wounded comrades. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Banks on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
