The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James F. Baggett (ASN: US-53017946), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, during F Company’s initial assault on Hill 400, the unit was subjected to intense enemy fire and numerous casualties were sustained. Although wounded himself, Corporal Baggett left his position of comparative safety and moved among the stricken members of his squad rendering first aid and offering encouragement. After assuring himself that all of the wounded had been cared for, Corporal Baggett again assumed command of and successfully led his depleted unit to its objective. The inspirational gallantry, courage, and leadership displayed by Corporal Baggett reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
