Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 154 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) William R. Anderson (ASN: 0-1041278), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of Battery C, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea, on 18 May 1951. Lieutenant Anderson was an Artillery Forward Observer attached to the 3d French Company, and was with that company on the hill when it was heavily attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. As the enemy reached the top of the hill and began to overrun the positions, Lieutenant Anderson took up an automatic rifle and led a savage counterattack, driving the enemy from the hill withy heavy losses and enabling the friendly troops to maintain their positions. His complete disregard for his personal safety and his inspiring leadership reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
