The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Hal Clark Granberry (ASN: 0-15358), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Longoskaumyan Point, in the vicinity of Mariveles, Bataan, Philippine Islands, while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 57th Infantry Regiment (Philippine Scouts), Philippine Division, on 29 January 1942. An enemy force having landed on this point, and for several days having withstood the efforts of a Naval-Marine battalion to dislodge it, was seriously threatening the position of the I Philippine Corps. The attack, by his battalion, on the preceding day having been unsuccessful, coordinated fires were arranged by him for the attack on 29 January 1942. These fires included that of the U.S.S. Quail to be delivered from the China Sea on the rear of the enemy position. No observation for this fire was available, except that from a single piece of high ground which was not only exposed to enemy small arms fire but was an extension of the gun-target fire of the U.S.S. Quail. Lieutenant Colonel Granberry, after disposing his battalion in defilade, voluntarily placed himself at this exposed point, and from there, by radio phone, conducted the fire, despite enemy rifle fire directed at him, to such advantage that by 1:00 P.M. his battalion was able to close with the enemy and had completely destroyed a much larger force strongly entrenched in its position. By his actions he set an example to his under strength battalion which made it possible for them to deal a blow to the enemy which destroyed the threat to the rear of the I Philippine Corps. Lieutenant Colonel Granberry’s gallant leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
