About the Hall of Valor
What is the Hall of Valor?
The Hall of Valor is a searchable database of valor award citations collected by Doug Sterner, a Vietnam veteran and Military Times contributing editor, and by Military Times staff. All recipients in the database are verified by source material such as official award citations, narratives and/or synopses from individuals or records from the National Archives.
Military Times launched a redesigned version of the site in 2024, including updated data compiled since 2020.
The Hall of Valor aims to honor service members through an all-encompassing historical record for researchers, award recipients, and their families.
What medals are in the Hall of Valor?
Military Times is adding medals in accordance with their place in the order of precedence. The database currently includes all recipients of the Medal of Honor and all of the second-tier valor awards: Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross and Air Force Cross.
We are in the midst of a multi-year effort to identify recipients of Silver Star and below. For these awards, absence of a name should not be considered evidence that an individual did not receive an award. Track our progress on our Awards page.
What valor awards can I search for?
Currently the database has citations from conflicts since the Civil War. We are currently building our database of citations for the Global War on Terrorism. We are also in the process of updating every preexisting entry from our old site. If you don’t see an entry you’re looking for, it might not have been imported over yet.
How do I search through the Hall of Valor?
You can search the database by typing in a name into the search box on the front page or the Search page. You can also search broader categories such as conflict and branch of service by using the navigation at the top of each page.
How do I find military records?
Part of the National Archives, the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis is the repository of millions of military personnel, health and medical records of veterans of all services from the 20th century. (Records prior to World War I are located in Washington, D.C.)
If you are unsuccessful in your attempts to locate records, please contact us.
How do I get an award added to the database?
To have a name added, please send official documentation (citation, narrative and/or synopsis) to hallofvalor@sightlinemg.com. The database is updated frequently, but please be patient as records must be vetted and may not be posted immediately.
How do I contact Hall of Valor staff?
If you have a question, suggestion, or information to add to the database, please email us.
