The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Sergeant Martin E. Casey (ASN: 20734471), United States Army, for heroism near ****, Belgium, on 10 January 1945. When a cooking unit exploded, setting a kitchen truck afire, Sergeant Casey entered the blazing vehicle and, even though his own clothes became ignited, rescued a cook who had been caught in the truck. He then returned, cut a hole into the tarpaulin covering the vehicle, reached a soldier who had been trapped in the cab, and carried him to safety. First Sergeant Casey’s daring and unselfish actions were responsible for saving the lives of two men and reflect credit upon his qualities as a leader and his character as a soldier.
