The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Jeremiah E. Dunne, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 45th Infantry Division during World War II. When he learned that an outposts to the front on the Anzio beachhead had been attacked by a superior enemy force, Sergeant Dunne led a counterattack which enabled a threatened outpost to withdraw to safety. The volume and accuracy of the fire of his squad forced the enemy to relieve the pressure on the threatened position. Although wounded, Sergeant Dunne continued the attack until the outpost had moved to a more secure position, under protection of the screening fire of his squad.
