Headquarters, 45th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 59 (March 27, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Harold R. Corkwell (ASN: 15102676), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 645th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Anzio, Italy, on 18 February 1944. When Company B engaged twelve enemy tanks, the whole area promptly came under heavy enemy artillery fire. Private Corkwell, company Aid Man, drove forward to the destroyer positions to evacuate the wounded. He made three trips through the shell fire before his vehicle was knocked out. Private Corkwell promptly commandeered a concealed 1/4-ton vehicle, loaded one injured man, and safely evacuated him to the rear. Private Corkwell’s energy and complete disregard for his own personal safety were responsible for saving the lives of four of his comrades. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
