Headquarters, 45th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 59 (March 27, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Infantry) John G. Boyd (ASN: 0-297433), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 3d Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 February 1944, near Caroceto, Italy. During the intense fighting on the Anzio bridgehead, the 3d Battalion, which Major Boyd was commanding, was attacked by a superior enemy force with tank and artillery support. Major Boyd immediately proceeded to the battalion observation post, where he directed the fire of his battalion until his phone was destroyed by shell fire. Major Boyd then moved to another observation post which was also under heavy enemy fire and continued direction of the battalion with a radio. Major Boyd remained in position until he was killed by an enemy artillery shell which landed in the observation post. His display of leadership and determination inspired his troops to hold their positions and repulse the enemy attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
