Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (September 22, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Isaac H. Durgin (ASN: 6857719), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. By his exemplary initiative and inspiring leadership, Sergeant Durgin directed his men in a gallant defense of a strategic position despite overwhelming odds. His enthusiasm instilled in his men a determination to hold the position at all costs. It was largely because of his excellent knowledge of military tactics that the enemy was driven off without casualty to his platoon. Staff Sergeant Durgin’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
