Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7 (February 21, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John F. Dulligan (ASN: 0-311839), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. Despite intense enemy machine gun and mortar fire, Captain Dulligan fearlessly guided a convoy across an uncharted mine fiend and delivered ammunition, food, and water to his besieged battalion. His dauntless courage and splendid initiative in delivering vital supplies enabled his unit to launch a successful attack. Captain Dulligan’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
