The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Dewey Deville (ASN: 7000606), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in 1943. When a platoon of heavy machine guns and mortars was in danger of being encircled by enemy forces in rugged, mountainous terrain, Sergeant Deville, on his own initiative, fearlessly exposed himself to the enemy to draw their fire and succeeded in removing the enemy’s threat to outflank the platoon. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
