The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James Cordaro (ASN: 5307317), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. When his squad leader had become a casualty and the squad was disorganized by heavy artillery fire, Corporal Cordaro quickly assumed command and led his men back to their gun and equipment. When this position became untenable, Corporal Cordaro withdrew his men to a better position and from this vantage point was able to turn back the enemy and enable our troops to gain an objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
