Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 52 (July 29, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Earl W. Chellis, Jr. (ASN: 31324662), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in the vicinity of Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy France, on 6 June 1944. Although painfully wounded while approaching the beach, Private Chellis refused to seek medical attention or shelter and directed automatic rifle fire on enemy positions, thereby greatly facilitating his company’s attack against important objectives. Private Chellis’ gallant act typifies the indomitable spirit of the invasion forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
