Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 45 (September 6, 1943)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) Hugh G. Brown, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily on or about 10 July 1943. During the initial phases of the invasion, Major Brown landed on a beach swept by enemy fire which disorganized beach parties and shore engineers. Quickly grasping the situation, Major Brown displayed sound judgment and leadership in organizing these parties, sending out security patrols, and establishing a line of guards along the beach to clear the danger area. His actions on this occasion contributed materially to the success of the operation. Major Brown’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
