Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (September 22, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles R. Clark (ASN: 0-1286074), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. When the ship from which he was unloading vitally important tactical vehicles was savagely attacked by enemy aircraft, Lieutenant Clark remained in an exposed position on the open decks and continued his supervision of the unloading. It was largely because of his courageous actions that the vehicles were landed in time to be of material assistance to our forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
