The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Frank W. Browne (ASN: 12021249), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Cannon Company, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Ferme Combier, Algeria, 10 November 1942. During the Oran Offensive, the self-propelled 75-mm. howitzer driven by Technician Fifth Grade Brown was thrown off a road by the explosion of a shell and although he was thrown clear of the vehicle, the armor plate shield fell upon him. In great pain, Technician Fifth Grade Browne crawled back to his vehicle, removed the firing lock from the breach of the howitzer and concealed it, thus rendering the gun useless to the enemy. He fired his rifle at enemy infantrymen closing in on him until his ammunition was exhausted and then feigned death to evade possible capture. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
