The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Lawrence L. Bowers (ASN: 0-308102), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. A sudden enemy counterattack encircled Captain Bowers’ company before the gains, made in a successful assault upon enemy positions, could be consolidated. Although the ground afforded little cover. Captain Bowers as able to extricate his unit from this untenable position by his calmness under heavy enemy fire and excellent tactical judgment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
