The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Jesse W. Brantley (ASN: 6954759), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. When he had exhausted his machine gun ammunition, Sergeant Brantley armed himself with a rifle and proceeded to a position affording a better view of the enemy. He remained in this position until withering enemy fire rendered it untenable. Sergeant Brantley’s courage in the face of overwhelming odds was largely responsible for his company’s success in defeating the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
