    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Ralph W. Bertrand (ASN: 6978051), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, on 31 March 1943. When heavy enemy machine gun fire endangered his squad’s successful withdrawal, Private Bertrand, although mortally wounded in the engagement, continued directing effective fire upon the enemy and enable the safe withdrawal of his squad. Private Bertrand’s action, at the cost of his life, was keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
