Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 15 (April 7, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Edward L. Austin (ASN: 0-311026), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Field Artillery Battalion of 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa during the period from January to April 1943. Captain Austin, while on a dangerous liaison mission under direct enemy tank fire, led a tank destroyer platoon to the safety of an alternate gun position. Captain Austin’s courage and excellent tactical judgment under fire prevented the possible destruction of his men and vehicles. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
