The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Pearson O. Porter (ASN: RA-54028981), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 18 September and early morning hours of 19 September 1952, in the vicinity of Kayangdae, Korea, Sergeant Porter was a radio operator for a forward observer section positioned on strategically valuable Outpost “Kelly”. His group had been relieved by a fresh forward observer team and he voluntarily remained on the contested hill to orient the new men on the tactical situation. In an enemy attack which rapidly grew in proportion that night, he courageously relayed accurate directions for fire which inflicted extensive damage upon the advancing foe. Despite the increasing momentum of the assault, he relentlessly continued to fulfill his responsibilities. In the ensuing close combat, the enemy overran the hill and finally Sergeant Porter relayed the command to fire all defensive fires. Sergeant Porter’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
