Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7 (February 21, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Edward C. Walter (ASN: 0-1165053), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. When vital communications were disrupted, Lieutenant Walter voluntarily proceeded over terrain swept by intense enemy fire and personally delivered an important message. He then returned to his own area and directed effective artillery fire on enemy strongholds. First Lieutenant Walter’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
