Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 44 (September 3, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Louis R. Wade, Jr. (ASN: 33002113), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 70th Tank Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily in July and August 1943. After having been seriously wounded by flying shell fragments, Corporal Wade insisted on remaining in his tank and, by skillfully manning his gun, scored five direct hits upon the enemy. Only after loss of blood prevented him from further action and he received a direct order from his platoon leader, did Corporal Wade report to a medical aid station for treatment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
