The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private] Henry Ray W. Tracy (ASN: 31229509), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. During an attack upon the enemy, Corporal Tracy escorted an aid man through heavy machine gun fire to render medical assistance to the wounded and then assisted in their evacuation to the rear. Later, he returned to his area, still under heavy fire, and recovered ammunition left by the wounded men. Corporal Tracy’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
