    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Walter J. Solon (ASN: 32284952), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. When a small patrol was attacked by a superior enemy force, Private Solon and four other men organized a defensive position, fearlessly held their ground, and inflicted numerous casualties on the advancing enemy. When the patrol was later reorganized, Private Solon was reported missing in action. Private Solon’s outstanding devotion to duty and sound judgment under heavy enemy fire merit the highest praise and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
