The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Infantry) Stanley W. Wapinski (ASN: 0-1324685), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Service Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On the afternoon of 28 July 1953, in the vicinity of Kwanam-Dong, Korea, Service Company had moved into a new location and a clean up detail had started a fire to destroy trash in the area. At this time, a gust of wind picked up some of the burning paper and carried it to a pile of approximately 900 rounds of 105-mm. ammunition. One of the rounds caught fire, creating a danger to the entire company area. Captain Wapinski, observing the incident and realizing the imminent danger to the lives of the men nearby, rushed to the pile of ammunition and picked up the blazing round. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he hurled the round into a nearby pit where it exploded harmlessly. His courageous action saved the men in the area from serious injury and possible death. Captain Wapinski’s outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
