Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 59 (October 14, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] John O’Connor (ASN: 6142830), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 32d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. When the enemy subjected his battery’s position to intense artillery fire, Private O’Connor left a place of comparative safety and proceeded to the aid of several wounded men. He coolly and courageously assisted in evacuating these men without thought of his own safety. Private First Class O’Connor’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
