Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 67 (December 1, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant James E. Myers (ASN: 6385901), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. Sergeant Myers proceeded under heavy enemy artillery and tank fire to the aid of a group of men moving an artillery piece to a firing position. He then voluntarily reconnoitered enemy territory and selected favorable gun positions for further action. His keen judgment and fearlessness materially aided his organization in attaining its objective. Staff Sergeant Myers’ gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
