Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1 (January 28, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Henry E. Mitchell (ASN: 0-338705), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. During an engagement with a numerically superior enemy, Captain Mitchell with two platoons, destroyed many enemy tanks. When his own armored vehicle was demolished by direct enemy tank fire, he courageously continued the attack on foot until the enemy was successfully repulsed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
