The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Norman E. Vincent (ASN: RA-31167920), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company A, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 3 October 1951, Company A, 64th Tank Battalion (Medium), was moving along a road, which had been heavily mined by the enemy, near Chorwon, Korea. A platoon of engineers, of which Sergeant Vincent was a member, accompanied the tank unit to clear the mines from its path; but despite its careful and hazardous labor, the lead tank of the column ran over an undetected mine and the resultant explosion overturned the vehicle, soon enveloping it in flames. Immediately after the mishap occurred, Sergeant Vincent rushed to the blazing wreckage and quickly aided a crewmember to reach safety. He then continued his rescue efforts and, moving decisively about, single-handedly assisted two other men to free themselves and escape the acute danger. By fearlessly exposing himself to the perilous situation, Sergeant Vincent saved the lives of three fellow soldiers and the superb fortitude with which the act was accomplished reflects high credit upon himself and the military service.
