The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James F. Morrell (ASN: 31464471), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Geishach, Germany, on 24 March 1945. When his company was impeded by an intense small arms barrage, Private First Class Morrell courageous accompanied a comrade across perilous terrain to an exposed vantage point and, with accurate fire, enabled his unit to move to a more advantageous position. Then, when captured after a bitter hand-to-hand engagement, he fearlessly assisted his companion, mortally wounded his guard, and skillfully directed the return to friendly lines. Private First Class Morrell’s gallant actions, and exemplary initiative reflect great credit upon the Army of the United States.
