The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Luther M. Hawkins (AFSN: AO-1910979), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while engaged with an enemy of the United States on 28 June 1952. Lieutenant Hawkins was Squadron Leader of eight F-84 type aircraft assigned the destruction of a concentration of enemy vehicles in the Kosan-ni, Korea area. Despite adverse weather conditions, mountainous terrain, and extremely intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Hawkins and his squadron continued to press the attack until one hundred and fifty vehicles and fifty fuel drums had been destroyed, eight automatic weapons were probably destroyed, and approximately one hundred and fifty enemy troops were killed. This destruction of enemy vehicles, supplies, and troops came at a time when they were sorely needed by them for a possible offensive movement. Because of his extreme devotion to duty, Lieutenant Hawkins has brought great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
