Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 505 (December 1, 1953

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant [then Corporal] Stuart J. Carroll (ASN: US-56108489), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. During the afternoon of 10 September 1953, in the vicinity of Araesimjae, Korea, a member of Company M developed a leg cramp while swimming in the Hantan-Chon River and was unable to reach shore. Observing the futile attempts by two other swimmers to save the man, Sergeant Carroll immediately rushed into the water and swam toward the drowning soldier. Diving under water to evade the man’s attempts to grab him, Sergeant Carroll courageously began pushing the man toward the river bank. Despite efforts by the drowning man to grasp him, Sergeant Carroll successfully removed him to safety. Sergeant Carrol’s gallant actions were directly responsible for saving the life of his comrade. Sergeant Carroll’s outstanding heroism on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
