Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 56 (October 6, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Glenn W. McCleaf (ASN: 33147007), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. Sergeant McCleaf remained in a forward area when a vicious enemy counterattack endangered his company’s position and, despite heavy mortar and machine gun fire by expertly firing his rifle he destroyed an enemy squad flanking his company, thereby saving his company’s position. His intrepid action materially aided his company in repulsing this attack. Sergeant McCleaf’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
