The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private George F. Hornacek (ASN: 33146116), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, in 1943. Private Hornacek proceeded to remove the flaming clothing from a fellow driver afire after his vehicle had struck an enemy mine. Despite burns on his hands and arms, Private Hornacek assisted his comrade to a place of safety. His courage and initiative exemplify the highest traditions of the armed forces.
