The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Peter J. Hoffmann (ASN: 0-1171191), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Field Artillery Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, in July 1943. When a determined enemy tank attack threatened an infantry battalion beachhead, Lieutenant Hoffman proceeded within tank range to a point 1,000 yards in advance of the infantry position. From this place, he effectively adjusted artillery fire, destroyed several enemy tanks, and compelled others to withdraw until he was wounded and driven off by direct enemy tank fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
