Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 27 (June 25, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Harry B. Hendra (ASN: 6713289), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during World War II. Assuming command of a platoon in the temporary absence of his platoon commander, Sergeant Hendra, displaying superior tactical judgment, displaced his destroyer so that a maximum of fire power was brought to bear upon enemy forces attempting to encircle our flank. Sergeant Hendra’s coolness under direct enemy fire was an inspiration to the offices and men of his company. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
