The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Hospital Corpsman Second Class [then Hospital Corpsman Third Class] Micheal R. Tam (NSN: B-510314), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Platoon Corpsman with Company H, Battalion Landing Team 2/7. Volunteering to provide medical assistance to another company that had taken heavy casualties, most of which were lying in an exposed area less than 100 meters wide between friendly and enemy positions, Petty Officer Second Class Tam courageously led three other Corpsmen into the exposed area. After administering first aid to two badly wounded Marines, he realized he needed help to evacuate the wounded and returned to the friendly lines for assistance. While returning to the first two Marines, two of the Marines with Petty Officer Tam were seriously wounded. Immediately rendering first aid, he crawled away for additional help, quickly returning and directing the evacuation of these two Marines. He then continued forward to the first two wounded Marines and with additional assistance safely evacuated these two. By his inspiring leadership, heroic actions, and selfless devotion to duty, Petty Officer Tam reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
