The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Albert Lee Shepherd (NSN: 0-72405), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. HEYWOOD L. EDWARDS (DD-663), in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, on 18 May 1945. When a friendly destroyer was severely damaged and grounded by enemy shore batteries, Commander Shepherd unerringly maneuvered his ship dangerously near the grounded vessel and, although within range of enemy guns, effected the rescue of survivors and delivered counter-battery fire against the enemy. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander Albert Lee Shepherd (NSN: 0-72405), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. HEYWOOD L. EDWARDS (DD-663), during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Western Pacific War Area from 12 March to 20 July 1945. Operating in dangerous waters for an extended period during the Okinawa Campaign, Commander Shepherd ably directed his ship in carrying out hazardous missions of shore bombardment and fire support of troops, the screening of valuable units of our Fleet, and radar picket patrol under difficult conditions. By his professional ability and perseverance, he contributed materially to the infliction of extensive damage on the enemy, and his devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
