(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Fireman First Class Ralph Edward Schuler (NSN: 3372066), United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star (Posthumously) for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving on board the U.S.S. PECOS (AO-6) during the sinking of that vessel by Japanese air forces off Christmas Island on 1 March 1942. Fireman First Class Schuler volunteered to man the cargo pumps and continued to man them throughout the action, in spite of the necessity of exposing himself to additional danger above his assigned duties. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
