The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Thomas Chandler Green (NSN: 0-61150), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy. As Commander of a Task Unit of Tank Landing Ships he led the second echelon in the attack on Japanese occupied Lae on 4 September 1943. When during the approach to the beach his unit was attacked by eighteen Japanese planes, he fought his command expertly, displaying outstanding leadership and courage, minimizing his own damage and inflicting damage on the enemy. When his Flagship was disabled, he transferred to another ship of his Task Unit and proceeded with the remaining ships of his unit to Lae. He landed, unloaded and retracted his ships on schedule, and demonstrated exceptional professional skill and gallantry under fire which was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
