(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Captain Norman Dwight Gage (NSN: 0-74901), United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer, U.S. Naval Submarine Base, New London, Groton, Connecticut, from 6 October 1961 to 25 June 1965. Captain Gage contributed immeasurably to the support complex of the POLARIS Weapons System.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Norman Dwight Gage (NSN: 0-74901), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the U.S.S. TAUTOG (SS-199), during a War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy controlled waters during World War II. As Diving Officer, his careful and precise control of depth were of invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting successful attacks which resulted in the sinking of six enemy ships, including three submarines. His coolness and high devotion to duty contributed directly to the success of his vessel in evading severe enemy countermeasures. His courage throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
