Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 334 (January 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant (MC) Walter George Epply (NSN: 0-192574), United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action as Officer-in-Charge of a medical section of a beach party from the U.S.S. President Adams (APA-19) during the assault on Guam, 21 July 1944. Lieutenant Epply landed under heavy mortar and shell fire and directed the establishment of his medical station. He exposed himself continuously to terrific hostile fire while rendering aid to the many casualties on the beach. He was killed while administering plasma to a wounded Marine whose life was saved as a result of the prompt and vital treatment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
