The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Curtis Richard Dose (NSN: 0-717513/1310), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy as a pilot of jet aircraft attached to Fighter Squadron NINETY-TWO (VF-92), embarked in U.S.S. CONSTELLATION (CVA-64). On 10 may 1972, during a major air wing strike against the Haiphong petroleum products storage target, Lieutenant Dose was the wingman of a section of aircraft assigned as the target combat air patrol element. Alerted to the enemy fighter aircraft launching from Kep Airfield, North Vietnam, the flight boldly maneuvered in close proximity at extremely low altitude to engage the enemy formation. Lieutenant Dose skillfully initiated an attack which accounted for one confirmed downed enemy aircraft after which he evaded a hail of anti-aircraft artillery fire in exiting the area. Lieutenant Dose’s superb airmanship, courage and devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
