The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade John Patrick Costello, II (NSN: 0-677985/1310), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving in Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron EIGHT, flying rotary wing aircraft during a mission in support of combat operations in Southeast Asia against North Vietnamese force son 9 March 1967. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Costello effected the rescue of the bombardier/navigator of an RA-5C downed by enemy action over North Vietnam. As pilot in actual control of an SH-3A (SAR) helicopter, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Costello was able to coax maximum speed from the heavy, SAR configured aircraft, arriving at the scene of the rescue when enemy ground forces were scarcely 40 feet from the survivor. He then brought the helicopter to a precise hover between the survivor and his pursuers so that maximum firepower could be directed at the enemy as the downed airman was hoisted aboard. This machine gun fire accounted for one enemy dead and the effective suppression of enemy resistance. As the helicopter was departing the area, it was bracketed by mortar fire, throwing it momentarily out of control. With calm professionalism and exceptional skill, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Costello brought the helicopter under control and completed the escape. By daring action, exceptional skill and loyal devotion to duty, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Costello upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
